Temple History
The Silhara dynasty rulers led Thane amid 810-1240 AD. They were the dedicated followers of Lord Shiva and therefore they constructed the Kopineshwar Temple during their era. It is the belief that this temple has been created in the tribute of Kopineshwar which was seen under water. In 1760, Sarsubhedar Ramaji Mahadeo Bivalkar rebuilt the temple when Salsette was caught by the Marathas. In 1879, the temple was again renovated by the Hindus. Since then, many developments have taken in the temple premises.
Architecture
The history of Kopineshwar Mandir goes back to the reign of the Silhara dynasty Kings who ruled the city of Thane from the 810 till 1240 AD. They were very devoted to Lord Shiva and they built the Kopineshwar Temple during their reign. People believe that this temple was actually built under water in the honor of Kopineshwar. The Kopineshwar temple was later reconstructed in 1760 by Sarsubhedar Ramaji Mahadeo Bivalkar after Salsette was captured by the Marathas. The temple was then repaired by the Hindus community in 1879. In the modern times the temple is situated in the busy Bazaar Peth, on the Station Road. On the entrance gates, you can see a huge sized Nandi, which is the sacred bull. The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva and one can 5 feet tall Shiva Linga. Within the premises of the temple one can see six small temple shrines which are dedicated to gods like those of Rama, Brahma Dev, Maruti, Kalika Devi, Shitala Devi and Uttareshwar.
There are six small temples inside the Main Shiva shrine complex at Kopineshwar Mandir which are dedicated to Ram, Shitala Devi, Brahma Dev, Maruti, Kalika Devi and Uttareshwar. Just opposite to the small shrine of Kalika Devi there is another shrine which is dedicated to Gayatri Devi. Many of these temples offer the striking and appealing view of the temple. The old red roof tiles and its wooden structure are truly grabs your attention. Being located in the busy Thane station road, the temple complex still offers the quiet and peaceful ambience to devotees.
