LEGEND:
According to legend, Maharishi Vashisht made an idol od Lord Krishna out of butter. The butter idol did not melt because of the Maharishi’s pure devotion to the Lord. The Lord decided to test the Sage’s devotion. He transformed himself into a small boy and started to eat the idol. The Sage lost his temper on seeing this and started to chase the boy. When the boy crossed a MagizhaMaram, the other sages performing penance caught him and tied him to a tree. The Lord then showed his true form to his devotees. Krishna is said to have blssed the sages in the form of Lord Damodhara and Damodhara Narayan.
Also, in the Ramayana, Lord Ram was a disciple of Maharishi Vashisht. One day, at Nagapattinam, Lord Krishna descended and taught Maharishi, taking the role of Guru that day.
Also, this was the place where the Lord bridged the gap between the mortals and the immortals. By showing his true form to his devotees, he proved that anybody who had pure devotion and sincerity in his prayers could see the Lord himself. He showed himself to a lot more people at that very place.
FESTIVALS:
On every MasiMagam, all the fishermen of Nagapattinam gather to the Loganatha Perumal Temple. The Lord is said to give his devotees his blessings and protect them from evil. MasiMagam is the special festival celebrated by the fisherfolk.
