The Legend says that Lord Shiva appeared in front of Banasura, pleased with his hard tapasyas. Banasura asked Lord Shiva to stand as a guard to his Kingdom. As soon as the boon was granted, Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvathi stood as the divine guards to his Kingdom. Chithralekha, the daughter of Banasura fell for Anirudhan, the son of Lord Sreekrishna. One day Anirudhan reached the Banasura Kingdom, in order to meet his lady love, where he was stopped by Lord Shiva. During the fight, Lord Shiva threw his axe and that axe is believed to have fallen in Mazhuvannur. Also, Parasurama is believed to have done the found the temple.
