Redi Ganpati Temple

On April 18th, 1976 one truck-driver, Sadanand Nagesh Kambali parked his truck at a particular place. This truck used to ply from Reddi’s (iron & minerals) mine to harbour. That truck -driver slept there and he had a dream. In dream, God Ganesha gave him divine appearance and told him to dig at the very same place, since He(God) is residing there. He had great faith in Lord Ganesha. As per his dream, he started digging there and to the astonishment of all the villagers, there appeared two-handed idol of Lord Ganesha, carved in solid rock. The date was 1st May 1976. After seeking omen from Gram–Devata (Village deity), it was decided to build a temple at the very spot and establish this deity. After few days, in the same area they excavated a big idol of mouse, which is a traditional vehicle of Ganesha. These idols are very pretty and graceful. Today one. can visit beautifully built temple and get delighted by taking “Darshan” of the adorable deity.

Lord Ganesh of Redi is a famous vigilant deity in Vengurla. The two armed statue of Lord Ganesh was found here during mining activity. Beautiful Goa beach lies at the South of the temple. At Redi beach one can see traditional fishing trawlers as well as huge foreign boats set led in the deep sea. One can also feel the glory of Sunset also. Recently this temple has rejuvenated & a prayer hall has also built with the help of pious. Many tourists from Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka visit here throughout the year.

The most unique thing about this temple is the two handed idol of Lord Ganpati. The idol was excavated from eight feet beneath the earth after a resident of Redi and an ardent devotee, Sadanand Kambli indicated the presence of such an idol buried in the earth. Apparently, Kambli was told in his dreams by the Lord about the precise location of the idol. He started excavating the place with his friend Juwelkar and other villagers. The idol was brought out from the earth on 1st May, 1976.

The beautiful Ganpati idol is in a sitting position and carved out of Murju stone. Unlike most other Ganesha idols which have four hands, this idol has only two. The idol is over six feet tall and four and a half feet wide. After seeking the blessings of the village deity, the villagers of Redi decided to build a temple at the very spot from where it was excavated. Forty days after the villagers brought out the Ganpati statue, they also found a statue of the Lord’s vehicle, a mouse from a mine. The mouse is kept in front of the idol.
