History & Architecture
Temple History
Sri Kodandarama Swami Temple is constructed in the year 1784 by Sri Dodla Rami Reddy known as Bangaru Rami Reddy. The temple has a beautiful rajagopuram which made up of limestone with images of gods and goddesses carved on it. The Temple has a Koneru in which devotees take a holy dip. This Koneru is enclosed within the four walls around it. Temple premises consist of many mantapams for the comfort and convenience of the devotees visiting this place. Temple has a Radham which is used during the Brahmotsavam to carry the deity in a procession around the village.
As per the legend, Lord Vishnu wanted to visit Bhooloka along with His consort Goddess Sridevi. He said Adisesha to be the place as Lord’s residence to stay at Bhooloka. Obeying the order of the Lord, Adisesha took the form as a mountain in this place. Thus the place is called as Talpagiri Kshethra. It is believed that sage Kashyapa performed Poundarika Yaga on Ekadasi day here. Lord appeared and blessed him.
Architecture
As this is south India’s few temples exclusively for the Legend of Ramayana, the Sri Kodanda Rama Swamy is held in great esteem and deference. While being acceptably close to Tirumala, this temple is also sufficiently detached from the rush and luster of Tiruapti. This implies that you can enjoy a pleasant and peaceful Darshan while enjoying your time with the Lord. According to Purana the temple was built at the Tretayuga, by the followers of Rama. It could also have been built during the time of Sri Venkateswara Swamy, commiserating the celebrated union between the two Lords.
While the temple Purana precedes the known records, the base for the present architecture was laid during the 10th century AD, by the Chola kings. Across the temple you can see the signature of artwork during the Chola period. And the temple acquired the present stature during the rein of Sri krishnadevaraya, during the 15th century. As a regular devotee, he gave great importance to this temple. He also included various raja mudrikas of the Vijaya Nagara dynasty.
If you are visiting the temple, don’t forget to examine the temple Gopuram, which is a work of great architectural excellence.
