About
DIVYA DESAMS
The Grace of Lord Vishnu is spread throughout the country, from the Himalayas to Kanyakumari. There are several temples dedicated to God Vishnu, which are also called Sthalams.
Out of these Sthalams, Alwars, who are said to be the 12 supreme devotees of Vishnu, have sung his praises and mentioned 108 of them. These 108 Vishnu Sthalams are called as “Divyadesams“, divya meaning premium and desam meaning temple, giving rise to the phrase “premium temples of Vishnu” .
The Divyadesams can be divided into 7 categories:
- ThondaiNaadu temples
- ChozhaNaadu temples
- Nadu Naadu Temples
- PandiyaNaadu Temples
- MalayalaNaadu temples
- VaduNaadu Temples
- VinnulagaThiruppathigal
The idols of Lord Vishnu in these Divyadesams can be found in 3 positions:
- KidanthaThirukkolam ( Sleeping Position ) – 27 Divyadesams
- VeetrirundhaThirukkolam ( Sitting Position ) – 21 Divyadesams
- NindraThirukkolam ( Standing Position ) – 60 Divyadesams
In these 108 Divyadesams, the Lord Vishnu can be seen facing one of the four directions: east, north, south and west. On this basis, the Divyadesams can be classified as:
- Towards East direction – 79 Divyadesams
- Towards West direction – 19 Divyadesams
- Towards North direction – 3 Divyadesams
- Towards South direction – 7 Divyadesams
