According to a popular history, a sage called Balamukhi visited the area and revered Lord Shiva with high devotion. As per the Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva is known for granting incredible boons. Finally, pleased by his sincerity, Lord Shiva appeared and granted him the boon of ultimate salvation. There is another popular legend regarding the origin of this sacred temple. It is said that a local ruler called Veerbhadra Swamy who was also an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva suffered from some mysterious physical problems. His spiritual advisors suggested him to build a Shiva temple. According to the advice, the King constructed the Mahadeva temple. To his astonishment, he was cured completely.
Architecture
The architecture of this sacred temple is a fine example of blend style of the Dravidian architecture and the Kerala architecture. The temple has one basement. However, it is said that no one can reach down to the mysterious basement as it is guarded by snakes. Local inhabitants claim that basement in the temple has an incredible treasure. Only the main priest of the temple is able to access to the basement of the temple. The exterior portion of the temple resembles the older style of architecture, a commonly followed style of the South India. The central area of the temple comprises the sacred idols of Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvathi. The idol of Nandi can also be seen in the same area.
